Romania, Death of Julius Maniu, 1952, large bronze medal, bust within geometric pattern, reverse chained eagle, ROMANIA IN VINCOLI, 1948, 98mm, in case of issue. Extremely fineJulius Maniu, leader of the National Peasant Party, was arrested in 1947 by the Communist led government, together with about a hundred other members of the opposition, on charges of espionage and treason. He was sentenced to solitary confinement for life. The following year Rumania adopted a new constitution modelled on that of the Soviet Union. This unusual medal is unsigned and there is no indication of who commissioned it or even in which country it was struck
