Edward Woolley enlisted into the 32nd Regiment on 26 November 1838. He served from July 1839 for two years in Canada before embarking for India in April 1846. He served during the Second Sikh Wars and was present at Mooltan and Goojerat for which he received the medal. Private Edward Woolley was a member of the original garrison at Lucknow and served throughout the defence until his death through disease on 17 September 1857.
