John Rowlands was born in Lewes in 1853 and enlisted in the Royal Welch Fusiliers from the Royal Sussex Militia at Brighton in June 1871. In his subsequent career of 20 years with the Colours, he several times achieved N.C.O.-status but on each occasion was eventually reduced to Private for assorted misdemeanours. A veteran of the Ashantee War, Rowlands was discharged at his own request at Curragh in January 1892.
