The 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment emplaned for Kenya for service during the Mau Mau Emergency on 29 March 1953 and deployed for operations in the Aberdare Forest May 1953. Embarked at Mombasa in H.M. Transport Dunera on 1 February 1955, they disembarking at Southampton 23 February 1955. M. J. Bawden was most likely a National Service enlistment.
