‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He attended to the many casualties of two battalions, working in the open under heavy fire for thirty-six hours without rest. During ten days’ hard fighting he was untiring in his efforts, and it was very largely due to his excellent organisation in one locality that the wounded of five battalions were successfully evacuated. He set a splendid example.’
