Richard McKenzie was born in Cockmuir, Elgin, in November 1872. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in October 1888, and advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class in May 1899. His service included with H.M.S. Orlando from February 1899 to April 1903. McKenzie advanced to Acting Chief Petty Officer in November 1911, and was shore pensioned shortly afterwards. He was mobilised as Chief Petty Officer in August 1914, and served at H.M.S. Excellent and H.M.S. President III during the Great War.
