Robert Gibson Hunter was the son of Robert and Harriette Mary Hunter, of Kirkmailing, Larbert, Stirlingshire. He served during the Great War with "A" Company, 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in the French theatre of War from 28 July 1915. Lieutenant Hunter was killed in action on 23 April 1917, and is buried in the Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, France.
