Alec Guy Houlder was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 2nd (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers), London Regiment on 30 March 1909 and was promoted Captain on 26 July 1912. Promoted temporary Major on 23 September 1914, and temporary Lieutenant-Colonel on 13 October 1915, he served during the Great War in command of the 2nd Battalion, London Regiment at Gallipoli from 13 October 1915, and saw further service with the Battalion on the Western Front. Confirmed in the rank of Major on 23 March 1917, he relinquished his commission on account of ill health on 1 September 1918, and was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
