Reginald Crawford Stephens was born in Salt River, Cape Province, in 1879, and attested for the 1st South African Infantry at Potchefstroom on 8 December 1915. Posted to the Western Front as Private, he was reported missing in action during the Battle of the Somme on 18 October 1916. He was later confirmed to have been killed in action and is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial.
George Percy Sullivan was born in George Town, Cape Province, in 1896, and initially served with the Kaffrarian Rifles and Kimberley Regiment. He attested for the 1st South African Infantry at Potchefstroom on 24 August 1915 and disembarked at Rouen as Private on 8 August 1916. Joining his unit 6 days later, he was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 18 October 1916, his papers adding: ‘accepted as dead’. Aged 20 years, he is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial.
