1914 Star (268 Pte. L. B. Goldschmidt. 5/Lond: R.) nearly very fine £70-£90
Lionel Bernard Goldschmidt was born at Queenstown, Eastern Province, South Africa in 1892 and was educated at Rhodes University College, Grahamstown, and King’s College Hospital, London. On the outbreak of the Great War he attested for the 5th (London Rifle Brigade) Battalion, London Regiment, and served with them on the Western Front from 4 November 1914. Demobilised as a medical student in 1915, he was commissioned into the Indian Medical Service, and served as a medical officer in H.M. Hospital Ship Syria.
Post-War Goldschmidt returned to South Africa in 1922, and was for many years a urologist in Cape Town, He served during the Second World War as an Honorary Colonel in the 3rd Field Ambulance as a part-time urological specialist in the South African Medical Corps. He died in Cape Town on 18 August 1955.
