John Tinkler was born at Trimdon Grange, County Durham, and attested for the Durham Light Infantry. He served with the 15th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 11 September 1915, and was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, on which date the Battalion was involved in the attacks on Crucifix Trench and Shelter Wood on the Fricourt-Contalmaison Road, during which the Battalion suffered 388 casualties. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
