Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Sebastopol (No.2857 Corpl., 79th Highlandrs.) contemporary engraved naming; Indian Mutiny 1857-58, 1 clasp, Lucknow (Corpl., 79th Highlanders); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (1269 Sergt., 101st Foot); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue, unnamed, all fitted with brooch buckles and sold with original parchment certificate of service and Chelsea Out Pensioner certificate, contact marks, therefore good fine or better (4) £300-350
William Telfer was born at Linlithgow, Scotland, and originally enlisted into the 79th Highlanders on 2 March 1848. He served with the 79th in the Crimea and Indian Mutiny and was discharged ‘time expired’ at Stirling between April and June 1860. He enlisted for a second engagement at Chatham for the 43rd Foot on 13 December 1860, transferring to the 101st Fusiliers in April 1864. He was finally discharged on 26 April 1870 on which date he was admitted as an Out Pensioner of Chelsea Hospital. The “79th News” of March 1908 lists him as a surviving veteran of the Crimean and Indian Mutiny Campaigns.
