Signal Boy Arthur Davis, R.N., was drowned on 5 June 1916, when the cruiser H.M.S. Hampshire struck a mine and sank off the Orkney’s. His body was recovered and buried in the Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery, Hoy, Orkney Islands. The armoured cruiser Hampshire was on a special operation, transporting Lord Kitchener and a military and financial mission to Russia. In a gale, the ship struck a mine, newly sown by the German submarine U-75, and sank within 15 minutes between Marwick Head and the Brough of Birsey. In the short time available to the crew, one boat was lowered but was smashed in the heavy seas, most of the occupants being drowned; three rafts were also launched but most of the occupants died from the intense cold.
