William Tierney was born in Chelsea, Middlesex. A Fishmonger by occupation, he attested for service in the Royal Fusiliers on 15 March 1898, aged 18 years, 8 months. Overseas, he served in Malta, November 1898-September 1899; India, September 1899-January 1901; Burma, January 1901-November 1903; and India, November 1903-November 1909, during which time he participated in the Tibet Expedition 1904. Tierney was discharged from the Royal Fusiliers in March 1910 and enlisted into the Metropolitan Police. Sold with copied army service papers.
