Robert Ellis was born in and enlisted at Newcastle, Northumberland. Serving in the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, he was killed in action on 28 March 1918, aged 33 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Ellis of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
