Henry George Beall was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 5 October 1943) for his services as Yeoman of Signals aboard the destroyer H.M.S. Tartar during Operation Retribution (operations against the German withdrawal from Tunisia, April-May 1943). Postwar, Beall served as a Chief Airman at H.M.S. Seahawk - the Fleet Air Arm base at Culdrose, Near Helston, Cornwall.

Sold with two newspaper clippings; one entitled ‘Medals from Moscow’ reads, ‘An old sailor’s bravery in the face of battle is to be rewarded by military chiefs from behind the Iron Curtain. The Kremlin is to award a commemorative gold medal to North Atlantic convoy veteran Harry Beall, of Woodmere Avenue, Watford, who helped to supply Russia with desperately needed war equipment 45 years ago. He will be among 21 members of the 10th Destroyer Flotilla Association to be presented with medals at a special ceremony on board H.M.S.
Belfast ... Mr Beall is the association’s chairman. The “veterans” were crew members of the British Royal Navy Tribal Class Destroyers ... which escorted supply ships from Scapa Flow to Murmansk ... between September 1943 and February the following year. ... One of the escort destroyers, H.M.S. Ashanti was nick-named the ‘Lucky Lady’ after surviving two torpedo attacks in quick succession. Mr Beall was among those serving on H.M.S. Ashanti. The men were later brought back to Plymouth to form the 10th Destroyer Flotilla which saw action during the D-Day Landings in Normandy. ...’
