John Mayne was born in Kings Nympton, South Moulton, Devon. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marines for a period of 12 years on 30 May 1848, aged 18 years, seven months. On the Albion, June 1850-November 1855, he served in the Crimea, being present at the battles of Balaklava and Inkermann, the siege of Sebastopol and the capture of Kinburn. After service on the Ajax, May-June 1856, he served on the Inflexible, August 1856-April 1861, on which ship he served in the Second China War. Promoted to Corporal in March 1859, he was reduced to Private and received corporal punishment for an offence when aboard the Indus in September 1862. He was discharged from the Royal Marines on 21 November 1862. Sold with copied service papers.
