Stoker Petty Officer Francis Levi Myers, the son of Winifred Myers, of Felling-on-Tyne, Co. Durham, was killed in action on 16 July 1943 whilst serving on the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Indomitable. His name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
The aircraft carrier Indomitable was part of the covering force for the invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky). At 00.25 of 16 July 1943 she was struck by an aerial torpedo from an Italian torpedo carrying aircraft. The torpedo struck the ship abreast the port boiler room causing casualties and a loss of speed. Not in immediate danger, the ship was able to rejoin the fleet before returning to Gibraltar and thence the U.S. Navy Yards at Norfolk for repairs. Sold with copied research.
