Military General Service 1793-1814, 2 clasps, Corunna, Salamanca (E. Purvis, Lieut. 4th Foot) top clasp slightly buckled, otherwise very fine £1400-1600

Edward Purvis was born on 21 April 1786, second son of Charles Purvis Esq., J.P. and D.L., high sheriff of Suffolk 1794, of Darsham Hall, Suffolk. He joined the army as an Ensign in the 4th Foot in 1805, being promoted Lieutenant in July 1808. He served in the Peninsular and was present at Corunna and at the battle of Salamanca, and appears to have left the army prior to 1815, in the rank of Captain. He subsequently resided at Watlington House, Reading, and was a J.P. for Berkshire. For related family medals see Lot 652 for the pair to his elder brother and Lot 56 for the medal to his nephew and son-in-law.
