Howard Rider Salmon was born in Sidcup, Kent, on 11 February 1890. An Engineer by occupation, he entered the R.N.A.S. on 1 January 1915 as a Petty Officer Mechanic. He was advanced to Chief Petty Officer 3rd Class on 1 September 1916. Based at Pembroke III and President II, he latterly served at Crystal Palace and Cranwell. During August 1917-March 1918, he was on the Ark Royal and at East Mudros in the Eastern Mediterranean. Entering the R.A.F. as a Chief Mechanic (E) he continued to serve at East Mudros until February 1919. For his services in the Mediterranean theatre of war he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (London Gazette 3 June 1919). Sold with copied service papers.
