Victoria (1837-1901), Farthing, 1838, an incuse die trial of the obverse, ww raised on truncation [should be incuse], ‘223’ inked on back, edge plain, 4.22g (cf. S 3950). Better than very fine, very rare and unusual, worthy of further research (£100-150)

The initials on the truncation of the first head used on the sovereign (1838-48) and farthing (1838-49) were rendered in raised letters; the date on the present piece and the fact that any coins struck from its die would have had incuse letters on the truncation shows that perhaps the original intention was for the first head of Victoria to carry incuse letters on the truncation
