An unusual 1796 pattern infantry sword possibly for a sergeant, plain brass double shell-guard and knucklebow facetted urn shaped pommel, wood grip bound with copper wire, the straight 67cm blade by J J Runkel engraved with crowned GR cypher stand of arms etc., complete with its brown leather scabbard with matching locket and chape, quillon bent otherwise good condition overall £250-300
'Standing Regulations' called for sergeants to carry a brass mounted replica of the infantry officers 1796 pattern sword in both dimension and form with an undecorated blade, this example differs in that not only is the blade shorter by some 15cm but is also decorated, the hilt assembly is also proportionate to the length of the blade.
