Sir Isaac Coffin, Bt (1759-1839), b. Boston, enlisted in the British navy in 1773 and rose through the ranks to become a full admiral in 1814. He had been granted the Magdalen islands by the British government in April 1798 but is said to have visited them only once, in 1815; on that occasion he distributed his penny tokens in the form of loans to the islands’ prominent men
