Natal, Durban, Durban Club, cupro-nickel Sixpence, 1860, type 1, small letters, edge grained (Hern 172a; Theron N10; Ford –). Slight staining on rims, otherwise very fine and very rare (£100-150)
The Durban Club was founded in the early 1850s as an ad hoc sports club for the playing of quoits and later billiards. The tokens ordered by the club from Birmingham are generally deemed to be the first coined money to have been issued within the confines of modern-day South Africa
