Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (Captain John Charley, 2/60th Foot) mounted for display, slight scratches to obverse, very fine £300-350

John Charley purchased his first commission in March 1856 and was purchased the ranks of Lieutenant in February 1860 and Captain in August 1867. He was promoted to the rank of Major in September 1879. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Afghan War, October 1878-February 1880, taking part in the advance on and occupation of Kandahar and Kelat-i-Ghilzie. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1881 and Colonel in July 1885; commanding the 3rd Battalion from June 1885 until July 1887 when he retired.
