India General Service 1854-95, 3 clasps, Bhootan, Jowaki 1877-8, North West Frontier (Lieut. C. J. Griffiths, 43rd Inftry.) official correction to one initial, good very fine £600-800

Clement James Griffiths was commissioned an Ensign on 13 June 1856 and was promoted to Lieutenant, 30 April 1858; Captain, 13 June 1868; Major, 13 June 1876; Lieutenant-Colonel, 2 March 1881; Colonel, 2 March 1885, and Major-General, 1 November 1887.

He served with the 43rd native Infantry in Bhootan during 1864, seeing action at the capture, retreat from and recapture of Dewangiri and several minor engagements. Served with the 3rd Sikhs in the Hazara campaign of 1868, including the expedition against the tribes on the Black Mountain. Again with the 3rd Sikhs, he served in the Jowaki expedition of 1877-78 and the Afghan war of 1879-80, during which he was present at the forcing of Shutergardan, where he was wounded and was mentioned in despatches; the action in the Chardeh Valley and the action at Takht-i-Shah. He was afterwards present in the operations around Kabul in December 1879, and accompanied Roberts on the march from Kabul to the relief of Kandahar, and the battle of 1 September. For his services he was again mentioned in despatches (
London Gazette 16 January; 4 May; 3 December 1880) and received the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel. Major-General Griffiths died in 1916 as the Colonel-in-Chief of the 53rd Sikhs. Sold with copied service details.
