Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (Corpl. John Longden, 2nd Bn. Rifle Bde.) good very fine £300-350

Corporal John Longden was wounded in the right temple on 11 March 1858 [casualty roll gives 12th March], at the siege of Lucknow.

He was born in the Parish of Warmsworth, near Doncaster, Yorkshire, and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Sheffield on 12 April 1855, aged 17 years 9 months. He was discharged at Gibraltar on 14 March 1877, in the rank of Sergeant-Major, being then in possession of the Indian Mutiny medal & clasp and the Medal for Long Service & Good Conduct. His conduct was described as ‘Very Good’ and he gave his intended place of residence as the Chief Warder’s House at the County Gaol in Derby, presumably with the intention of becoming a warder rather than an inmate.
