M.M. London Gazette 21 September 1916.
‘Somme, 1916. - For conspicuous gallantry in the Auchonvillers sector on August 17th. Whilst his battery was being accurately and consistently bombarded with 21cm. shells the men were ordered to clear to a flank for protection. Driver Henney was leaving his dug-out for this purpose when one of his comrades was buried by the trench being blown in. Driver Henney at once stopped and started digging him out unaided. He was indefatigable in his efforts, the whole time under shell fire, until the man was finally dug out. By his prompt action he undoubtedly saved his comrade from suffocation’ (Extract from 29th Divisional Artillery History).
Driver James Henney, R.F.A., entered the Egypt theatre of war on 31 March 1915. He won his M.M. serving with the 13th Battery R.F.A. in France. His M.M. was one of six (plus one bar) awarded to the battery. Sold with copied research, including service papers, war diary and m.i.c.
