Joseph Salter was born at Malmesbury, Wiltshire, and enlisted for the 60th Foot at Reading on 28 September 1877, aged 18. He served overseas with the 3rd K.R.R.C. in Natal, February 1879 to December 1881; in Egypt, September 1882 to August 1884; in Cyprus, September 1884 to June 1886; and at Gibraltar, June 1886 to October 1889. He then transferred to the 7th K.R.R.C. as Sergeant from October 1889 to 3 August 1895, when he was discharged medically unfit. Sold with copy discharge papers which confirm all medals and clasps.
