4 officers and 43 other ranks of the 5th Lancers served in the Heavy Cavalry Regiment on the Nile, of whom 2 officers and 33 other ranks fought at Abu Klea.

Lance-Corporal S. Parker was killed in action at Abu Klea, 17 January 1885. The regiment had Major L. M. Carmichael and 5 men killed, and one man who died of his wounds.
