Three: Staff Sergeant Farrier J. H. Franklin, 19th Hussars

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 4 clasps, El-Teb-Tamaai, Suakin 1884, The Nile 1884-85, Abu Klea (1539 Sgt. Farr. H. Franklin, 19th Hussars) top pair of clasps detached; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (1539 Sgt. Farr. J. H. Franklin, 19/Huss.); Khedive’s Star 1882, initials ‘JHF’ faintly scratched on reverse, very light pitting from star, otherwise good very fine (3) £800-900

The whole of the 19th Hussars served on the Nile, of whom 7 officers and 128 other ranks fought at Abu Klea.

John Henry Franklin was born at Bucklebury, near Newbury, Berkshire, and enlisted into the 19th Hussars at Heston on 4 May 1875, a farrier by trade, aged 22. Appointed Shoeing Smith, he was promoted to Farrier in September 1875 and to Farrier Quartermaster Sergeant in March 1886. He reverted to Farrier Sergeant in January 1889 but was promoted to Staff Sergeant Farrier from October 1894 until his discharge on 26 May 1896. Sold with copy discharge papers which confirm all medals and clasps.
