Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, 3 clasps, Tel-El-Kebir, The Nile 1884-85, Abu Klea (12252 Gunr. R. McDowell, 1/2 Bde. R.A.) light pitting from star, otherwise very fine £500-600

Served on the Nile with 1/1st Brigade R.A., of whom 4 officers and 42 other ranks fought at Abu Klea, 1/1 being the only battery present.

Robert McDowell was born at Belfast and was a stonemason by trade before enlisting for the Royal Artillery at Newcastle on Tyne on 4 May 1881, aged 19 years 2 months. He served in Egypt and the Sudan from August 1882 to September 1885, being present with 1/2 Brigade at Tel-El-Kebir, and served on the Nile and at Abu Klea with 1/1 Brigade. He was appointed acting Bombardier in April 1886, confirmed in March 1887, and was discharged on 3 May 1893. Sold with copy discharge papers.
