8 officers and 247 other ranks of the Royal Sussex Regiment served on the Nile and fought at Abu Klea, in addition to which 2 officers and 25 other ranks served in the Mounted Infantry Camel Regiment at Abu Klea.
Private William Salt was one on the small Mounted Infantry detachment from the Royal Sussex Regiment at Abu Klea. He was born at Reading, Berkshire, and enlisted for the Royal Sussex Regiment at Brighton on 15 August 1883, a groom by trade, aged 18 years 10 months. He served with the 1st Battalion in Egypt from December 1883 to December 1885, and then with the 2nd Battalion in India until March 1891. He joined the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Essex Regiment, in April 1896, and transferred to the Militia Medical Staff Corps the following month. He joined the Special Service Section in December 1899 and went to South Africa in January 1900 as a Sergeant. However, after two convictions for various offences he was discharged medically unfit as a Corporal on 31 October 1902. Sold with copy discharge papers.
