John Vince was born at St John’s Wood, London, and enlisted into the South Staffordshire Regiment on 3 June 1871, aged 14. He was appointed Band Sergeant in May 1882, became Bandmaster in May 1890, and was discharged on 12 July 1897 (WO 97/4072).
