This lot was sold as part of a special collection, Egypt and Sudan Medals 1882-1891 from the Collection of Jack Webb.

An employee of Messrs. Lucas & Aird, contracted to build a railway from Suakin, on the Red Sea, to Berber, near Khartoum, a distance of 200 miles. Only 20 miles of track were built, however, before the army withdrew. Several locomotives built specially for this contract were subsequently put to work on the Chattenden & Upnor Railway in Kent. Sold with a copy of his entry on the roll.
