William Murray was born in Weymouth, Dorset. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Somerset Light Infantry at Taunton on 14 October 1882, aged 20 years. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India and Burma, October 1886-January 1889. He was discharged on 15 January 1889 due to paralysis of the right arm.
