George Pengelly (or Pengelley) was born in Devonshire in December 1853 and entered the Royal Navy in December 1871. Advanced to Able Seaman, he served in the Ashantee operations aboard H.M.S Amethyst from December 1873 to January 1874, in addition to brief periods of attachment to the Dromedary, Rattlesnake and Simoom in the latter year. He was pensioned ashore as a Petty Officer 1st Class in March 1892.
