Harold Godfrey Bird joined the Navy in December 1864 as a Naval Cadet, and was promoted Midshipman in April 1867, Sub-Lieutenant in January 1872, and Lieutenant in April 1876. He is shown on the medal roll as Lieutenant of Tenedos during the Zulu war of 1879. He is listed in the Navy List of October 1879, but is absent from the Navy List of January 1880.
