The Most Honourable Order of The Bath, G.C.B. (Military) Knight Grand Cross breast star by Hancock, silver with gold and enamel appliqué centre, circa 1850, 90x84mm, the reverse centre inscribed with maker’s name ‘C. F. Hancock late Partner of Hunt & Roskell successors to Storr & Mortimer 39 Bruton Street London’, fitted with silver pin for wearing, minor enamel damage to wreath and ‘Ich Dien’ motto, otherwise nearly extremely fine and a rare variety £2000-2500

Charles Frederick Hancock, formerly a partner in the celebrated firm of Hunt & Roskell, opened his first shop at 39 Bruton Street in 1849. Within a few months he had received the Royal Warrant of Queen Adelaide, who died later that same year, and of Queen Victoria. By the time he retired in 1870 the firm held the Royal Appointment of virtually all the crowned heads of Europe. Famous for the manufacture of the Victoria Cross, the firm of Hancocks & Co. still exists to this day.
