M.I.D. London Gazette 7 April 1942: ‘For skill and bravery in action against enemy submarines while serving in H.M. Ships Stork, Penstemon, Deptford and Samphire.’ This was in recognition of the destruction of U-131 in the north Atlantic by H.M.S. Penstemon, in which ship Hickman was serving, and other ships on 17 December 1941.

M.I.D. London Gazette 6 April 1943: ‘For bravery and skill in the hazardous operations in which the Allied Forces weere landed in North Africa.’ Hickman was still serving as Chief Mechanician in H.M.S. Penstemon.

Herbert Hickman was born in 1901 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy in 1916. For his service in the Great War he was awarded the British War and Victory Medals (not in lot). He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in 1934, and was invalided out in 1947. He subsequently joined the Royal Naval Reserve and was awarded the R.N.R. L.S. & G.C. medal in 1964 as a Grade 1 Plotter. He died in the Royal Naval Hospital at Stonehouse, Plymouth, on 15 June 1967, aged 65. Sold with copied research.
