Joseph Sadler Gill was appointed a Temporary Lieutenant in No. 5 Company New Zealand Garrison Artillery Volunteers (formerly the Lyttelton Naval Artillery Volunteers) on 24 July 1905. In June the following year he was confirmed in his rank. In 1907 his unit was retitled No. 1 Company (Lyttelton Naval Artillery Volunteers) Canterbury Division of the Garrison Artillery Volunteers. Gill was advanced to Temporary Captain in 1909 and in April 1911 was he promoted to Major and the command of No. 4 Company (Lyttleton) New Zealand Garrison Artillery. In 1912 Major Gill transferred to the N.Z. Garrison Artillery Reserve of Officers. On 26 Janaury 1915, with the outbreak of war, he rejoined and became a Major in command of No. 8 Company (Westport) N.Z. Garrison Artillery (T.F.). On 1 October 1915 he was seconded for service with the Expeditionary Force in the rank of Captain. He was promoted Major in January 1917. Major Gill was Officer Commanding a Section of a Divisional Ammunition Column. Awarded the N.Z. Long and Efficient Service Medal by General Order 110 of April 1927. Sold with copied research.
