Francis John Williams was born on 26 April 1906. Mobilised for the Second World War from the T.A. Reserve of Officers, appointed Lieutenant, August 1939; Acting Captain, October 1939-January 1940; Temporary Captain, January 1940-April 1944; Acting Major, January-April 1944; and Temporary Major, April 1944-January 1954. He was promoted to Captain in April 1944 and Major in January 1954.
Although nominally with the R.A.S.C., 1939-50, he served on the legal staff throghout his army career and served in that capacity in Malaya during 1950-52. He joined the Army Legal Services Staff in 1953 and retired with a gratuity on 1 July 1956. As the A.L.S.S. was not properly constituted until about 1953, his G.S.M. was named to him on the ‘Employed List’ rather than the A.L.S.S.
