Wilfred James Taylor was born in Toronto, Canada in March 1885 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy Signaller in June 1900. A Leading Signaller aboard the Dover Patrol destroyer H.M.S. Kangaroo by the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he remained similarly employed until coming ashore to an appointment in Victory I in December 1915. Then, in March 1916, on the back of brief service in the depot ship Woolwich, Taylor returned to destroyers, firstly in the Druid, and, from November 1916, until more or less the War’s end, the Orford. He was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 11 December 1918 refers) and advanced to Yeoman of the Signals. Having then been awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in February 1920, he was pensioned ashore in March 1925.
