The following entry for Rhodes appears in the National Roll of the Great War (Section XI, Manchester):
‘He joined the army in November 1916 and in December 1917 he proceeded to France where he saw severe fighting on the various sections of the front. He took part in the Battle of the Somme and many other important engagements. He was wounded in action on the Marne in June 1918. On his recovery he served in the Labour Corps until November 1919, when he was demobilised, holding the General Service and Victory Medals (32, Dorset Street, Hulme, Manchester).’
