Frederick Arthur Wellesley was born on 24 May 1844, the 3rd son of the 1st Earl of Cowley. He entered the Coldstream Guards on 24 March 1863 and was appointed an Ensign and Lieutenant in August 1863. He was advanced to Lieutenant and Captain in October 1866 and Lieutenant-Colonel in April 1873. He was appointed one of Queen Victoria’s Aides-de-Camp with the rank of Colonel on 22 January 1878. He retired from the Army in January 1881. He was appointed Military Attaché at St. Petersburg on 24 July 1871 and Secretary of Embassy at Vienna on 29 April 1878, resigning in August 1879. During the Great War Colonel Wellesley served with the French Red Cross, entering France in February 1915.
