Hans Richter (1843-1916), Austro-Hungarian composer, first came to England in 1877 at the behest of Richard Wagner; he subsequently became principal conductor of the Birmingham triennial music festival and director of the Hallé and London Symphony orchestras. He retired from public life in 1911
