The only Eton pupil in 1865 with initials matching that on the medal was Charles Stancliffe Newton, from Prince‘s Gate, London SW7, who was at Eton 1860-5. Newton, 10st 2lb, won the second semi-final of the School Sculling, 25 May 1863, and placed third in the final; he was fourth in the semi-final of the School Pulling, 7 July 1863. He was in the victorious Eton crew which won the Ladies’ Cup at Henley on 23 June 1864, and other victories that year were in Dames v. Tutors, 29 April, Two Sides of College, 6 May and Lower Fours, 13 May. He placed second in the final of the School Pulling, 7 July, and was in the winning Eton team against Westminster School in the race on 28 July from Chiswick Eyot to the Star and Garter, Putney. Successes continued in 1865, when he was appointed second captain of the boats; victories were in Dames v. Tutors, 24 March, Two Sides of College, 31 March, and Upper Eights, 31 July. He was third in the finals of both the School Sculling in May and the School Pulling, 13 July. In 1866 Newton went to University College, Oxford, and was part of the Oxford Etonian’s crew which won the final of the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley on 21 June. The victory was repeated on 4 July 1867, and on 26 June 1868 Newton’s crew won the final of the Ladies’ Cup. In later life Newton lived at Oakham, Rutland. Further details are sold with the lot
