Buckinghamshire, Eton College, a bronze award medal for Tug of War, unsigned [by Birmingham Medal Co], similar, rev. tug of war wet bobs v dry bobs around wreath, named (A. Lubbock, 1915), 39mm. Extremely fine; in official red fitted case with metal nameplate detailing the members of the 1915 Wet Bobs team coached by P.H. Hartley (£40-50)

Sir Alan Lubbock, Kt, MA, FSA (1897-1990), of Adhurst St Mary, Petersfield, Hants, a King’s Scholar, at Eton 1910-15 and an editor of the Eton College Chronicle in his last year; at 11st 11lb rowed for the defeated Light Blues team in the Trial Eights over the Datchet course, 25 March 1915, and at Henley for Eton I, when they defeated the Shrewsbury boat on 3 July 1915. He served as a Lt in the Royal Garrison Artillery, 1915-19, being wounded in France, then went up to King’s College, Cambridge. He served on Hampshire County Council from 1932 to 1974, including a spell as chairman from 1955-67, and was appointed High Sheriff of Hampshire in 1949; he was also deeply involved with Southampton University for over 30 years and a bust of him is preserved in the University’s Hartley Library.
