Sir Edward George Geoffrey Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby (1799-1869), who lived at Knowsley Hall, Lancashire, entered Parliament as MP for Stockbridge in 1822. He was appointed Secretary of State for War and the Colonies 1833, after whom Port Stanley in the Falklands is named. Leader of the Conservative party for 22 years, from 1846 to 1868, he served as Prime Minister for most of 1852 and again from February 1858 to June 1859 and from June 1866 to February 1868. A zealous promoter of exhibitions in his younger days, he organised the first Royal Dublin Society exhibition in 1833
