Maurice Power was appointed an Ensign in the Calcutta Volunteer Rifle Corps on 7 November 1868. He was promoted to Lieutenant in October 1870 and Captain in June 1871. He retired from the Corps in November 1878 being permitted to retain his rank and uniform. On 19 December 1886, Captain Power was appointed Paymaster of the Northern Bengal Volunteer Rifle Corps, and continued as such until December 1891. In February 1889 the title of the unit was changed to the Northern Bengal Mounted Rifles. The award of the Volunteer Officers’ Decoration being extended to officers of the Colonies and India in 1894, Captain Power was awarded the V.D., this being published in G.O. No. 2 of 1 January 1895. In civil life, Power was variously, an Assistant in the Bengal Secretariat, Office of the Secretary of the Government of Bengal; Head Assistant, Judicial Department, Office of the Secretary of the Government of Bengal; Registrar of the Political and Judicial Department of the Secretariat; Superintendent of Darjeeling Jail; Vice-Chairman of the Municipality of Darjeeling.
